Asia Miles just froze JAL awards. Here’s where your points should go instead

Cathay Pacific’s Asia Miles program suspended Japan Airlines award bookings on Friday, with no reason given and no end date. If you were planning to move flexible points into Asia Miles for a JAL flight, stop: the points would land in a program that currently cannot book the ticket you want, and transfers cannot be reversed.

What exactly is frozen

Per Milesopedia’s reporting, as of October 9, 2026, Asia Miles members cannot book new JAL award tickets and cannot change existing award tickets that include a JAL segment. The block covers JAL’s whole network – US-Japan routes and domestic Japan flights alike. Cathay calls the suspension temporary and says it will post an update if anything changes, but has offered neither a reason nor a timeline.

If you already hold a JAL award ticket issued through Asia Miles: it remains valid. Fly it on the dates you booked – and treat those dates as fixed, because Cathay is not processing changes to tickets with JAL segments while the suspension lasts.

Why the transfer decision is the dangerous one

Asia Miles is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards (1,000 points = 800 Asia Miles), Capital One Miles, and Bilt Rewards (1:1). Every one of those transfers is one-way. Points moved into Asia Miles for a JAL redemption are now stranded for that purpose until Cathay reverses course – which is exactly the kind of speculative transfer this column always argues against. The rule holds: find the award space first, then move the points.

Where JAL awards are still bookable

The most direct route is JAL’s own program. JAL Mileage Bank is a Bilt transfer partner at 1:1, and Capital One miles transfer to JAL Mileage Bank at 2:1.5 (1,000 Capital One miles become 750 JAL miles). If you already hold AAdvantage miles, search JAL space there first – American prices JAL flights as a fellow oneworld member. Bilt also transfers 1:1 to Atmos Rewards, the shared Alaska/Hawaiian program, which prices JAL flights as well. Prices and availability differ across all of these, so compare the full cost – taxes and fees included – before moving anything.

The checklist, then: already booked with Asia Miles, fly as planned and don’t try to change it. Planning a JAL award, keep your points in their bank program until space is confirmed. Need a JAL seat soon, search first, then transfer Bilt or Capital One points to JAL Mileage Bank. And watch for Cathay’s update – suspensions like this sometimes reverse as quietly as they arrive.
