The shoulder season cheat code still works – but not where you think

Fall isn’t a shoulder season anymore – it’s becoming the main event. TravelAge West’s trend report this week puts numbers on it: Virtuoso’s autumn bookings are up 59% over last year, September sales up 77%, and Europe’s September bookings are on track to beat August for the first time. Which means the old cheat code – go after Labor Day, get summer’s destination at a discount – needs a patch. CNN’s earlier fall reporting showed the same from the price side: domestic fall airfare up 39% year over year, costing more than peak summer for the first time in years. The secret season is out. But the savings aren’t gone – they’ve moved. Here’s where they went.

What’s still true

International fares do still drop from summer to fall – just less dramatically. Hopper’s data has Europe fares falling 22% from summer peaks this year (versus 33% in 2023). So the Europe-in-October play still beats the Europe-in-July play; it simply costs more than the same trip did last fall. The season’s other original promises are fully intact: thinner crowds, sane temperatures, locals who have time to talk to you. If you were traveling for those, nothing has changed.

Where the discounts actually went

Expedia’s fall data, per the same reporting, shows prices in the ten most popular US destinations running higher than summer – while specific beach and mountain towns still offer real savings, naming Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Aspen, Colorado. In Europe, Portugal’s Algarve and the Greek islands are still delivering genuine fall value while the UK runs 20-30% above summer in places. The pattern: the discount didn’t disappear, it fled the famous zip codes. The 2026 shoulder-season skill is picking the second-choice destination on purpose.

The tactics that matter more than the season now

  • Stay over a Sunday. It’s typically the cheapest night of the week; a Sunday-through-Thursday trip beats Thursday-through-Sunday even in the same destination.
  • Flex the airport, not just the dates. Regional airports within the same state can price meaningfully differently on the same day.
  • Flex the destination within the trip type. Decide “beach” first, then let prices pick which beach.
  • Use points where cash prices spiked. A fare that’s up 39% in cash is often unchanged in miles – devaluations move slower than demand shocks.

Shoulder season in 2026 is no longer a date range you buy; it’s a set of moves you make. The travelers still smiling in October are the ones treating “fall” as a strategy, not a calendar page.
